Leadership UA Sessions, 2008-2009
Sessions meet from 5:00 to 9:00 PM unless otherwise indicated. Please note locations. Dinner is
served beginning at 5:00. Sessions actually begin between 5:45 and 6:00 PM.
9/25/2008, Welcome and Orientation:
location The Forum, 5:30 - 8:30pm
Get to know your Classmates during dinner. Learn about community leadership and integrity
from Joe Valentino, UA Assistant City Manager. The Human Services Component of the class will be explained by Diane Sturges.
Mary Ellen Hatch, our Executive Director, will outline the vision of the year.
10/9/2008, Social networking with
the LUA Board of Trustees from 5 to 7 PM at the Metro High School. Then "Communication and Presentation Skill Development",
from 7 to 9 PM: with Patrick Donadio. Patrick is a communications expert and master business coach. Visit his website,
PatrickDonadio.com for some great business tips. At Metro High School, 1929 Kenny Road.
October 17th, 1 PM, Retreat
at Camp Akita, through lunch on Saturday October 18th:
The retreat will be held at Camp Akita, located in the Hocking
Hills. It is an overnight event. This is where you will really get to know your fellow class members. We convene at 1 PM on
Friday and conclude at noon on Saturday. On Friday, we will explore some unique personality evaluations with Brad Mitchell
of OSU. On Saturday we’ll see how we work with Paul Otte of the Franklin University Leadership Center.
10/23/2008: Meet the Candidates Night at the UA Council Chambers, coordinated by Ed Seidel and Diane Sturges.
11/6/2008:
Theories of Leadership & Class Project Development. We will explore the multiple theories of leadership with Brad
Mitchell and Sunita Byg will guide the class as we develop our class project. During the year, class members will work
together on their class project to identify, develop and implement a project to benefit and meet an identified need within
the community. Location to be announced.
11/20/2008: Human Service Presentations:
Your turn to present your service organization to your class members. Sunita Byg will continue to guide the class as
we develop our class project. At the Board of Education.
12/4/2008: Work with Paul Otte
of the Franklin University Leadership Center. At the Board of Education.
12/11/2008: LUA Annual
Alumni Reception at the Chelsea at First Community Village, from 5 to 7 PM. Relax and enjoy meeting LUA Alums in a festive
setting.
1/8/2009: UA Government & Police Station Tour:
Meet the UA City Leaders at our Municipal
Center and learn how the city of Upper Arlington really functions. Also, we will be taking a behind the scenes tour of UA’s
Police Department. Speakers include: Virginia Barney, City Manager; Cathe Armstrong, City Finance Director; and the Chief
of Police, Brian Quinn. At the Municipal Services Center, 3600 Tremont Road.
1/12/2009:
UA Council Meeting, coordinated by Ed Seidel. Class members attend a city council meeting to gain insight
into serving, processes, and procedures for these areas of leadership as well to introduce them to other leader's roles
and responsibilities within and for the community. At the Municipal Services Center, 3600 Tremont Road.
1/22/2009:
Leadership Panel Discussion, Library Little Theater: Join a diverse group of local leaders in an open panel discussion.
Open to alums and other local leadership programs. Also, an introduction to our exciting UA Library services.
2/5/2009: The future of UA’s Economic Development. UA’s Deputy City Manager of Economic Development, Matt
Shad, will lead us through the history and challenges of economic development within the city of UA. Local business leaders
will also contribute to our discussion. At the Municipal Services Center, 3600 Tremont Road.
2/19/2009:
A History of UA and a Tour of the Fire House: Enjoy a dinner prepared by the fireman and tour the station before gaining deeper
insight into the highlights of UA’s history. At the Fire House #71 on Arlington Avenue and at the Board
of Education.
3/5/2009: Understanding UA’s Schools: Meet with the "Who’s Who"
of the UA School System and the UA Education Foundation. Then discuss school related issues such as the politics underlying
the school levies with the pros. At the Board of Education.
4/2/2009: More leadership perspective
with Paul Otte of the Franklin Leadership Center. At the Board of Education.
4/16/2009: Leadership
Seminar, “Putting it All Together”: Brad Mitchell will guide you through a discussion of "where to
go from here". At the Board of Education.
4/30/2009 Class Graduation and annual
LUA Award Ceremony: 5:30 to 8:00 PM: Time to celebrate with your fellow class members and time for LUA to present its annual
awards to leaders within our community. This will be a special event attended by board members, key community leaders, and
your guests. A summary of your class project will be presented. At the Scioto Country Club.
Additional
Provisions:
• Attendance is requested at all sessions. To get the most out of the program, and ensure that the experience
is maximized for other class members, it is important that you are present and on time for the sessions. We do understand
that from time to time emergencies occur and will interfere with your schedule, but otherwise we expect you to make every
effort to attend.
• All Classes will begin at 5:00 and end at 9:00 p.m. unless otherwise noted.
• Some
course work will be completed outside of scheduled class time, including the group project work and an interview with a human
service agency.
• Class-members are expected to attend a City Council Meeting as a group in January and a School
Board Meeting in February or early March.
